ChaCha Receives $6 Million

Why are Scott Jones and Brad Bostic smiling?

ChaCha receives $6 Million from Bezos Expeditions, Rod Canion, Jack Gill, Don Aquilano, and Simon Equity Partners.

What is ChaCha?

A human powered search engine, individuals search for you.

Who Invested?

Jeff Bezos runs Bezos Expeditions, Rod Canion is the founding CEO of Compaq, Jack Gill is the co-founder of Vanguard ventures and founding partner of Maven Ventures. Don Aquilano is managing director at Gazelle TechVentures. Simon Equity Partners also invested.

What will they use this funding for?

My guess is more of the same and learn how to scale.

VCU says:

Many may say that Cha Cha is attempting what many may call impossible, read these quotes from the ChaCha site: “By searching with a Guide your query is sent to a real person who is skilled at finding information on the internet and knowledgable on the subject at hand so that you get the few exact results you want, not the millions of results you don’t……When your query is submitted, an alert is sent to all appropriate Guides who are currently signed in to the system. Because the Guides can see the question you submit, you can submit your question in natural language, just like you’d ask any person a question.” Accorindg to ChaCha they only provide quality, human approved results.

Buy I tried it, and I was amazed. A chat window opened on the left and
“Jennifer M” assisted me. She said hello and verified the search I was attempting. I was attempting to search for “connect panasonic video camera to macbook pro”. She was cordial and began to search for me, she could not find what I was looking for, I let her know the USB connection was not working for me, the MacBook would not recognize it. She searched but then transferred me to GayleneW after asking for my approval.

While the search results were obviously not as fast as other engines, I should not complain because they searched for me while I watched Tom and Jerry with my kids. After a couple of minutes she provided me with one site, that was close, it did discuss cameras and MacBooks but did not tell me how to connect. I told her it did not have the information I needed and she gave me to JessieW. Jessie said she would send general resources and they slowly populated my screen, the first one was a message board which solved my problem, the camera must be connected via the firewire port, looks like a trip to the Mac store will solve this one.

They then asked me to rate their performance, I gave JessieW a great rating as she solved my problem. Interestingly I could not rate the others but this was still an interesting experience. I am not sure how you scale this but I will definitely use it for the difficult searches I cannot figure out. I wish I had this when I was in school, having someone do my homework would have been great.
