Why are Founders Jimmy Wales and Angela Beesley smiling?
They have received an undisclosed amount of Series B funding, from Amazon.
What is Wikia?
Wikia is a wiki site for information on thousands of topics in the form of articles in over 45 languages. Over 400,000 articles on 2,000 topics have been created and edited by over 30,000 registered users.
Amazon.com Inc. has provided the Series B financing.
What will they use this funding for?
From what we understand it means that Wikia will use the undisclosed amount of funds on expanding operations, serve new communities across the world, and have greater range of topics on its website. Business as usual?
The concept of providing information in the form of a wiki (user communities) has become a hot market. At Wikia there are wiki communities that create free content with the MediaWiki software. The content is hosted free of cost by Wikia, Inc., the company which runs and owns the project.
In October of 2004, when the company was founded it was called “Wikicities”. However, after the completion of its first year of operations, it was rechristened Wikia in March 2006. Since its launch, the company has accumulated over 400,000 articles on over 2,000 topics and have over 30,000 registered users and 45 languages. There is a wide range of topics that include politics, psychology, TV Shows, Celebs, electronics, travel guides, and others.
With Wikia you can share information, news, stories, media, and opinions with your friends. The Wikia community is open and anyone can contribute content.
