Why is Vipin Jain smiling?

He received $3.2 Million of Series A funding.

What is Retrevo?

In their own words the are the “The Ultimate in Consumer Electronic Search”. A search engine for consumer electronics information. The idea is to helps consumers check community opinions, find pre-purchase information, monitor daily deals and get product documentation for technical support and troubleshooting. They have information in 12 consumer electronics categories, including cell phones, smartphones, cameras, camcorders, home audio and home video, portable audio and portable video, printers and wireless networking.

Who Invested?

Norwest Venture Partners and Alloy Ventures.

What will they use this funding for?

I did not read exactly what they will use the funding for, however I would assume it will be put to use in continuing their development and maybe trying to get their Retrevo search box placed everywhere they can for distribution.

VCU says:

Beleive it or not, I do think there is a need for specialized search. By specialized I am referring to search with a focus on a particular vertical, or genre, or related items of some sort, such as sports search, cooking search, in this case consumer electronic search. Whether or not this is a hit or considered valueable by consumers, well, only consumers will tell. However, here is what I found.

After using the search provided by Retrevo I found that the obvious benefit of specialized search yielding more relevant results, they actually provided many value add benefits as well. It was not just raw search but they segmented the search results into categories based on source of the information, such as Manufacturers, Reviews & Articles, Forums & Blogs, and Shopping. They also provide a preview window of the results you highlight, I found this very helpful to see the results without leaving their search.

Keep an eye on this one, and give it a try.
